I read all the bulletin inserts on the Retranslated Mass and don’t find the real reason for its development. It is an effort on the part of conservative Vatican officials to undermine the liturgical changes of Vatican II which permitted the laity to participate fully in the Mass and the 1970 translation we, as well as the clergy, can understand. To cover up this political move many of the explanations for changes are made up after the fact. When the explanation for change is inadequate, these apologists fall back on “Latin text.” Does the use of the old translation really mean that for the last 40 years the Church has had a weak or wrong set of communal prayer??
I find that those who question the new wordy translation are generally correct. E.g., the Nicene creed does open with “credimus”; and is “many” the same as “all”?
